Steart

Steart

The area around the Stert Peninsula includes the villages of Combwich, Otterhampton and Stockland Bristol, as well as Steart itself. It is also the end of the West Somerset Coast Path, which covers 25 miles from Minehead to Steart, and of the River Parrett Trail, which covers 5o miles from Cheddington in Dorset.

There are easy footpaths throughout the Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust’s (WWT ) site, and a circular bridleway between Steart Marshes and the village of Combwich. The villages of Stockland Bristol and Otterhampton are also connected to the coast by local footpaths.

The area is characterised by the Stert Peninsula and the estuary of the River Parrett, which forms the main coastal area of the Somerset Wetlands National Nature Reserve, and includes the Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust’s (WWT) Steart Marshes and Bridgwater Bay.

As well as being part of the National Nature Reserve, it is also within the Severn Estuary Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and is categorised as a Special Protection Area (SPA), a Ramsar Site and a Special Area of Conservation (SAC). These national and international conservation designations emphasise its ecological importance.

The coastal and estuarine habitats include areas of threatened coastal marsh and support nationally important populations of wintering waders and waterfowl.

The villages have a long history with the port in Combwich dating back to Roman times and all featuring in the Domesday Book.
